Weird news: A photo NASA took of Mars several years ago was recently found to contain an image of a large upright stone on the Red Planet. Scientists say it's just a stone and wasn't erected by anyone - or anything - but it certainly looks like it was. Several people have pointed out that the structure looks similar to the monoliths seen in "2001: A Space Odyssey." See the picture at the link above.

Opening bell: U.S. stocks opened modestly lower after a two-day rally, as a slowdown in China overshadowed a batch of better-than-expected earnings results. The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) dropped 50 points, or 0.4 percent, the S&P 500 (SPX) shed 5 points, or 0.4 percent, and Nasdaq (COMP) lost 15 points, or 0.5 percent.
Watercooler talk: Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker arrived home last night to discover his next-door neighbor's house on fire, and rescued a young woman trapped upstairs by carrying here through the flames, suffering second-degree burns in the process. See a video report here:
