Rochester —
"Step Afrika!" a visually exciting, high-energy show featuring the tradition of stepping, is coming to the Andrews B. Hale Auditorium on the Roberts Wesleyan College at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11.
Stepping is a form of dance that uses the body as an instrument, combining it with movement and spoken words to create the rhythm. It was created in the early 1900s by African-American college students.
"We are excited to perform at Roberts Wesleyan College," said C. Brian Williams, Step Afrika! founder and executive director, in a release. "As we celebrate our 18th season of traveling and touring around the world, we hope to showcase both traditional and contemporary stepping styles in a highly engaging performance."
Williams founded Step Afrika! in 1994 as an educational tool to promote teamwork and cross-cultural understanding. He was first exposed to stepping through his fraternity at Howard University, but wasn't inspired to create the company until his time living in Africa.
Tickets for the performance cost $21, with discounts available for senior citizens, current students, veterans and alumni.
