The Ukrainian Federal Credit Union (UFCU), which is based at 824 East Ridge Road, Irondequoit, has awarded 16 scholarships and Merit Awards this year totaling $16,000.

The scholarship awards were based on the applicants’ involvement in the Ukrainian community and their academic achievements.

Applicants were also required to write essays about interesting aspects of their family history and what services and benefits will keep them life-long members of the credit union.

The 16 finalists were selected from 26 applicants.

Since 1999, the Ukrainian Federal Credit Union, which has six branches and 16,000 members nationwide, has awarded more than $170,000 to its student members. The credit union was founded in 1953.
