The Gates Town Board is expected to schedule a public hearing for dog licensing and animal population control at its meeting Monday night.

The town charged the Contestabile family Sept. 1 with violating the Gates dog ordinance law, which allows only two dogs at each home. The family currently owns three dogs at their home on Charlene Drive.

The Contestabiles say the Gates dog ordinance law is the most restrictive in the county by only allowing two dogs without the possibility of applying for a kennel license to keep more. Other towns, like Chili, Greece, Irondequoit and Riga, allow families to have dogs over the limit if they apply for a kennel permit. All other surrounding towns in the area, with the exception of Chili, have a limit that is higher than two dogs, and a few towns, including Clarkson, Ogden, Sweden and Webster, have no limit at all. The Wheatland Town Board is planning to tighten its limits soon, however, with plans to enact a dog limit law at their October or November 2010 Town Board meetings, going from unlimited dogs (currently) to three dogs per household.

The family was issued a citation for violating the ordinance after an anonymous report came in to the town, claiming that the residence had three dogs.
