A section of the Erie Canal that was closed to boating last month is expected to re-open Thursday.
New York State Canal Corp. spokesman R.W. Groneman says it will take a couple of days to refill a 20-mile stretch with water, beginning with 10 miles from Medina to Albion. That’ll be followed by the remaining stretch between Albion and Holley.
A 25-mile segment was closed to boaters and drained for inspection and repairs two weeks ago after a large sinkhole developed in a road running alongside the canal in Orleans County. A five-mile portion reopened last week.
Groneman said Monday the sinkhole was caused by leaks in a culvert buried nine feet below the bottom of the canal. Crews replaced more than 100 feet of piping and fortified the embankment.
