Red Wings name new manager

The Minnesota Twins named Gene Glynn manager of the Rochester Red Wings on Saturday. The 55-year-old Glynn was a professional scout for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011.

Buffalo recalls Kassian from Rochester

Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier announced Thursday that forward Zack Kassian has been recalled from the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League.

MacIntyre backstops Amerks in 2-1 victory

Zack Kassian scored his third goal in as many games and Drew MacIntyre made a season-high 43 saves to help the Rochester Americans to a 2-1 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins tonight at The Blue Cross Arena. The victory was Rochester’s third straight and also marked the fourth in five games for the Amerks, who improve to 7-5-2-1 (17 points) and keeps them atop the AHL’s North Division.

MacIntyre made back-to-back starts for the time first time this season after sharing the crease with counterpart David Leggio through the first 14 games of the campaign.

Amerks Erased Two Goal Deficit but Lost in Overtime

The Rochester Americans were down by two goals heading into the third period but goals by Colin Stuart (third of the season) and Derek Whitmore (fourth of the season) narrowed the game and forced the game into overtime.  Louis Leblanc scored his first professional goal in his first professional game to lead the Bulldogs to the win in overtime.

Amerks fall to Toronto in overtime, 5-4

For the second straight day, the Rochester Americans needed more than 60 minutes to decide a hockey game and, for the second game in a row, lost in extra time while gaining a point.  After a shootout loss to Hamilton on Friday night, the Amerks went to Toronto and suffered a 5-4 overtime defeat to the Marlies.

Amerks topple Crunch in shootout to win third straight victory

The Rochester Americans earned their third consecutive victory on Tuesday night by defeating the Syracuse Crunch, 3-2, in a shootout. The Amerks rallied with a late power-play goal with less than five minutes remaining and ultimately came out on top in the five-round shootout.

Nieto won't return as Red Wings manager

The Minnesota Twins announced today that manager Tom Nieto and hitting coach Floyd Rayford will not return for the 2012 season with the Minnesota Twins organization. Both Nieto and Rayford will not have their contracts renewed.

Newark Pilots win PGCBL Championship

The Newark Pilots won the 2011 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL)
Championship Series over the Amsterdam Mohawks with a sweep of their Thursday night double header at Shuttleworth Park.

After dropping Game 1 to the Mohawks 5-2 at Colburn Park, the Pilots took the final two games of the series 4-3 and 7-4 respectively to win the inaugural PGCBL crown in their first-ever season as team.

Yesterday was Abby Wambach day in Rochester as the soccer superstar made several appearances in her hometown. Fans flocked to Eastview Mall in Victor to catch a glimpse of the Pittsford native and a crowd of 15,000 set records later in the day at a Western New York Flash soccer game.

Terry Pegula 'arrives' in Rochester

The new owner of the Rochester Americans, Terry Pegula, give his vision and reasons for purchasing the Amerks to reunite the affiliation with the Buffalo Sabres that had lasted 29 years. "It wasn't about leaving Portland, it's all about arriving in Rochester," Pegula said.

Sabres sign purchase agreement with Americans

The Buffalo Sabres announced Friday they have signed a purchase agreement with the Rochester Americans hockey club. The AHL Board of Governors unanimously approved the transaction earlier in the day. The Sabres also announced their affiliation agreement with the Portland Pirates has ended.

The Sabres expect to hold a press conference in Rochester next week to set forth their plans for the franchise.

Gates Chili High School graduate Tim Redding pitched six innings, struck out eight batters and went 2-for-3 at the plate as the Albuquerque Isotopes defeated the Memphis Redbirds, 4-3, in baseball action on Monday.

Source: Sabres' owner close to buying Amerks

The Buffalo Sabres have signed a nonbinding letter of intent to purchase the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League in Terry Pegula’s latest bid to expand his hockey empire.

“We are two-three days into our due diligence,” a person familiar with negotiations told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because of a confidentiality agreement that is in place.

Sabres, Amerks need to reunite

The Rochester Americans affiliation with the Buffalo Sabres ended after the 2007-08 season, as Buffalo teamed with the Portland Pirates and Rochester was left with the Florida Panthers, who haven’t made the playoffs since 2000. There appears to be hope of the Amerks and Sabres reuniting in the near future. Staff writer Dan Goldman feels that would be a good move for both sides.
