Daemen College men’s basketball coach Don Silveri is pleased to announce the signing of Gerald Beverly to a NAIA National Letter of Intent. Beverly has accepted a scholarship offer and made his commitment official this morning in a brief ceremony. The 6-7 forward will enroll in classes and join the Wildcats men’s basketball program this coming fall after completing his senior year at Gates Chili High School in the Greater Rochester area, where he has starred for the Spartans and coach Monte Nowden. In addition to his exploits on the hardwood at Gates Chili, Beverly has expanded his game in the AAU circuit for the Roc City Ballers and coach Al Nash.
Monroe Community College sophomore Allyn Parrino was recently selected as the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA).
Gino Marcello, 2008 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School, was instrumental in leading Keuka College to the North Eastern Athletic Conference lacrosse title.
Seniors Mike Dempsey (Gates Chili), Matt Marion (Honeoye Falls-Lima), and Brian Walker (Brockport) of the RIT men’s track and field squad, will represent the Tigers at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 26-28 hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.
Dempsey will make his second-straight outdoor NCAA appearance in the pole vault. Last year, he was the national runner-up in both the indoor and outdoor championships. In March, he finished fifth and earned his third All-American honor in the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships. Dempsey has the fifth best vault during the outdoor season, at 5.07 meters, and has a career-best leaps of 5.16 meters outdoors, and 5.16 meters indoors. Dempsey holds the RIT indoor and outdoor records in the pole vault. The pole vault event takes place at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Adam Wacenske (Gates Chili), a sophomore at Ithaca, received honorable mention to the all-conference team.
Dempsey defeated 11 Division I athletes to win the pole vault at the prestigious Penn Relays for the second consecutive year on Friday. He braved the cold and wind to place first with a season-best leap of 4.95 meters, just off a NCAA automatic qualifying jump.
Churchville-Chili senior Brian Lang is headed to Nazareth College in the fall on a partial scholarship.
