Seniors Mike Dempsey (Gates Chili), Matt Marion (Honeoye Falls-Lima), and Brian Walker (Brockport) of the RIT men’s track and field squad, will represent the Tigers at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 26-28 hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.
Dempsey will make his second-straight outdoor NCAA appearance in the pole vault. Last year, he was the national runner-up in both the indoor and outdoor championships. In March, he finished fifth and earned his third All-American honor in the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships. Dempsey has the fifth best vault during the outdoor season, at 5.07 meters, and has a career-best leaps of 5.16 meters outdoors, and 5.16 meters indoors. Dempsey holds the RIT indoor and outdoor records in the pole vault. The pole vault event takes place at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Marion, who was an All-American in the 400-meter hurdles during the outdoor season in 2010, will make his third straight appearance in the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400-meter hurdles. Marion finished 12th in 2009 and seventh in 2010. He currently has the ninth fastest time in the nation of 52:89 seconds. In 2011, Marion made his indoor track NCAA Championship debut in the pentathlon, finishing ninth. He did set a NCAA Championship record by winning the 1,000-meter run during the event with a time of 2:35.18. The 400-meter hurdle prelims will get underway at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, with the finals getting underway at 3:45 p.m. Saturday.
Walker makes his first appearance in the NCAA Championships and will compete in the hammer throw on Thursday at 3 p.m. Walker will enter this weekend's championship with the 13th best toss in the nation. On April 23, Walker recorded his career-best toss of 57.22 meters, while breaking a 36-year old school record in the event in 2010.
