The 16th-seeded Penn Yan Lady Mustangs basketball team won the opening tip-off Tuesday night against the top-seeded Newark Reds. They also won the fourth quarter. But when the final buzzer sounded Newark had won easily, 60-27.
Newark senior Sabrina Macaulay needed only three quarters to rack up a career-high 27 points.
In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs outscored the Reds, 11-6, as Newark coach Diane Kirnie pulled her starters. Kirnie not only managed to get all of her players some experience on the hardwood, but nine out of 12 girls scored on the night.
“We take it one game at a time,” Kirnie said. “We have a really tough game here Friday night [against No. 9 Aquinas]. They have played a tough schedule and played a lot of big schools.”
Macaulay also added six rebounds, four assists and four steals as teammate Brynn Lauer netted 15 points, seven rebounds and 10 assists.

In Palmyra Tuesday night, the 7th-seeded Pal-Mac Red Raiders girls basketball team relied on double-digit scoring from three girls in their five-point win over the visiting Screaming Eagles.
Ashley Vanderwall, with 14 points, along with Brittany Szcachta with 11 and Kelsi Nau with 10 led the Raiders (12-7), who move onto the Class B quarterfinals where they will face No. 2 Waterloo Friday at a place and time yet to be determined.
Abby Dygert led the Eagles (10-9) with a game-high 19 points.

At Wellsville, the visiting Wildcat girls had their work cut out for themselves after a long trip to the very southern New York town Tuesday afternoon. Down by nine after the first quarter, Whitman matched Wellsville point-for-point in the second quarter but were outscored 44-22 in the second half.
Brittany Messler, with 23 points, along with nine other teammates scoring in the game, made the difference.
Claudia Coleates, with 11 points, led Whitman, who ends their season at 5-15.

No. 6 Dansville 50
The Screaming Eagles pulled off an upset win to improve to 9-10 on the season. Nicole Wright put Midakes up 51-50 with a layup late in the game and Jenn Goodman sealed the game with two free throws. Goodman finished with 17 points and Jenn Strub added eight points and 10 rebounds.
The Screaming Eagles will face No. 3 Wellsville in the quarterfinals.
