I’d like to respond to the letter written by Rochelle Asher in the Feb. 9 Brighton-Pittsford Post, about not being allowed to hold a religious service at the Brighton Recreation facility at Brookside School. I understand her frustration, and I am concerned that she was not satisfied with her experience with the town.
However, I need to set the record straight. Mrs. Asher did not speak with me. Instead, she spoke only with members of our Parks and Recreation Department staff. Neither the town nor the Brighton Central School District, which owns Brookside, permit public religious services in their facilities, although the town rents its facilities to religious groups for other purposes.
I have reached out several times since the letter appeared to speak with Mrs. Asher because I want to better understand exactly what happened and explain our policies. I also would like Mrs. Asher to know that I value the diverse faith communities that make Brighton home, and I wish her organization success in its mission.
